Our Experience with TuitionWorks – Online Maths Tuition for Children

2020 was certainly a year like no other, and one of the things I realised pretty quickly – that was then confirmed by my children over and over, was that I’m not a natural teacher! Although there were many positives we have taken as a family from lockdown, such as spending more quality time together, teaching and playing such an active role in my children’s learning during home schooling definitely wasn’t one of them!

Although we are now in a much more positive place with the kids back at school and I’m thankful to now just be dipping in with spellings or reading, this period has certainly given me food for thought…

My children are still relatively young (7 &9) and are doing fine, but I’m conscious that as a parent I want to be doing everything I can to ensure this continues and that they are meeting their full potential as time goes on. Especially as the stakes get higher, the older they get with exams and assessments already peeking their way over the horizon.

As a couple we have already had conversations about different ways we can support and supplement their learning. We’ve always made sure our children are involved in extra curricula activities, yet until now these have been limited to sport. Therefore when TuitionWorks got in touch and offered us the chance to try out their online maths tuition we were really keen to try it. TuitionWorks has been set up to provide one to one maths tuition for children from key stage one right through to A-levels.

All the sessions are run by qualified specialist tutors and something that also really appealed was that its all done through an online classroom with an interactive whiteboard.

We had our taster session with my son Albert who is 9 and arranging and setting up the session was really straight forward. I don’t know about you, but I still feel a tad mentally scarred from all the tech stresses during lockdown – Balancing all the different downloads and devises at at the right time was a constant battle during home schooling, so I was very relieved when I found out this is all super simple with an easy user friendly dashboard to login to.

There are three simple steps:

1. A FREE online 15 minute Maths assessment for your child (Albert found this very straightforward. You simply click the link to start and it takes you through a set of 30 questions.)
2. You then schedule a FREE 15 minute chat with your tutor to talk through the results and their approach to tutoring. (This was really great as my son was a bit unsure what to expect beforehand, so having a friendly chat on screen really helped)
3. Your child is then scheduled in for the session itself. Again this is accessed through the dashboard and easy to login. (Albert had an hour one on one session that took place in his own tailored maths classroom with the tutor he had already met on the intro call) The sessions range from £35-75 per session. I can see from just one session that regular tutoring can give children the tools to move past where they would normally get to in school, enabling them to take their learning to another level.

The User Dashboard

This was a part of the set up I really liked. I feel like life is busy enough without having to constantly get my head round new tech. For me – there’s nothing worse than outsourcing something to help with family life that then ends up creating its own headache! So I was very happy to find out all you need to do is click a link in an email create a username and password and you are taken straight into a user-friendly dashboard. There’s a schedule with upcoming meetings (similar to Zoom) so we could just click on these both times to get into the session (And check we had the right times) and then other areas with invoices and payments, so you can keep on track and also lesson reports.

Alberts Session

The fact that Albert was able to come out of a session with a comprehensive understanding of a topic he hadn’t fully understood at school and have now moved on from, I can see that regular tutoring could really make a difference to his level of learning.

Albert really liked his session. He has always enjoyed and excelled in maths at school, yet his enthusiasm definitely waivered during home-schooling. Although he is back on track now, I love the idea of having a little catch up session scheduled weekly with a qualified tutor – So can jump straight in, filling any gaps with one on one attention, that he wouldn’t necessarily get in a school lesson. In his session he went over some decimal work he’d been doing at school that he wasn’t sure of and it really helped. The interactive whiteboard was also a hit, he enjoyed that they could both write and draw on this a the same time while working through the questions. When I asked Albert what he liked about it, he said “

“It was fun, I liked working through the sums together, then I understood how to do it straight away, rather than having to wait till the end to ask questions.“

Overall we were both impressed and I would really recommend the service for either catch up sessions after lockdown, or as a way to enhance your child’s learning on a one to one basis to supplement what they are learning in school.
