7 Reasons to Get the Kids into New Hobbies

This is a collaborative post

As an adult, you are free to indulge in your hobbies whenever you have a spare moment or you have the will to do so. With kids at home and work, it’s not always easy to find time for hobbies, but it is very easy to let them slack off. However, if you want your children involved in new hobbies, then you have to set an example, and that means making sure that you have hobbies yourself.

Hobbies are the activities that we do in our downtime, and they are there for pleasure. They don’t necessarily have to be monetized, and they don’t necessarily have to be something that you do as a team if you don’t want to. But your children need to see you engaged in a hobby if you hope to engage them in one.

Getting the kids into new hobbies isn’t the easiest thing to do, especially when you know your child well. You don’t want them to feel overwhelmed or exhausted, and you don’t want them to feel like it’s too much pressure. However, hobbies help to shape healthy adults. So let’s take a look at some of the reasons that you should say yes to getting your kids into new hobbies.

  1. Boost their self esteem. If a child is enjoying an activity, whether it’s so low or with friends, the odds are they’re going to want to do it often and they’ll get pretty good at it. Watching your child go from tinkling away on the piano keys to becoming a concept pianist is something amazing. Hobbies can offer your child an outlet. It’s a way for them to be able to showcase their physical abilities or how creative they are, and it gives them a great sense of pride in their accomplishments when they do succeed. This is going to be one amazing self esteem booster.
  2. It’s good for stress relief. You’re going to notice a marked difference in your child when they go from being stressed out at school to burning off that stress when they play soccer or football. Depending on the hobby, they’ll be able to push out a lot of adrenaline from the build up of the day and they will have that feeling of complete relaxation with hobbies that they enjoy. There is no pressure, there is no stress, there is no homework. It’s just keeping the brain actively engaged and having fun at the same time, which is the goal.
  3. Hobbies can teach life skills. A violinist or a guitarist probably won’t learn much about life from that particular hobby. What they will learn is how perseverance makes a difference. They will learn that confidence comes with achievement, and they will learn self-discipline.They’ll practice their fine motor skills and understand their coordination better. They’ll be able to set goals and meet those goals. All of these are skills that they can take into later life.
  4. They are so good for their physical well-being. If you get your child involved in karate, swimming, or any hobby that requires physical movement, you can feel rest assured that they’re not just sitting around on screens all of the time. They are going to be getting all of the health benefits of exercise and they’re not going to notice it. In fact, they’re just going to be out there having fun with their friends, winning trophies and medals and feeling good about themselves. The fact that it’s a bonus to their physical well-being won’t be something that’s on their radar, but it will be something on yours as a parent.
  5. It’s a great way to make friends. Children are often foisted into the same classroom of children all day long. This means they rarely have the opportunity to socialise or explore with kids from different walks of life or different ages. At their hobbies, they’ll be able to mix with kids of all ages from all backgrounds, and the only thing that they’ll have in common is that they are all there in that moment, enjoying that hobby. It’s a great way to build new relationships.
  6. They’re going to learn a lot. Building new skills with a hobby can help your child with a wider education, those who love to write can learn about sentence structure or grammar, and those who love to collect rocks could learn about science and geology. Whatever your child’s interests are, you’ll be able to improve upon those skills with a new hobby.
  7. They’re great for banishing boredom. If your kids are bored after school, then getting them involved in a club that they can look forward to is a great way to get them into something fun and banish the boredom.
